The Spiderwick Chronicles

Their world is closer than you think.

Upon moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures.

I always thought about The Spiderwick Chronicles books as something that expanded on the magic of Harry Potter. I used to see them on the bookstore shelves around the time that the Goblet of Fire was published. I never bought them back then, so when I first saw the movie in 2008, I loved it. After reading the books, I discovered that the movie suffered the A Series of Unfortunate Events treatment, meaning that a couple of the books in the series were adapted into a single film. In comparison, it lacked some depth, the character development was rushed, and the final confrontation was less dramatic. In spite of this, the movie is still very entertaining. I especially like the production design. All the creatures are carefully done. Freddie’s performance is great. I’d say that it’s still one of the best fantasy films of the XXI century.
