Lady Bird

Time to Fly.

In 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.

I’ve been a Saoirse Ronan fan since I first saw her in City of Ember (2008). Ten years, 57 wins & 131 award nominations later we get to Lady Bird, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. To be a Golden Globe winner and a three times Academy Award Nominee at the age of 23 is a great achievement.

Lady Bird, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, tells the story of Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California in 2002.

Similar to Jim Jarmusch’s 2016 film Paterson, the city in which the main character lives plays an integral part in its development. We can understand it clearly in a conversation between Lady Bird and one of the sisters.

Sister Sarah Joan: You clearly love Sacramento.

Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson: I do?

Sister Sarah Joan: You write about Sacramento so affectionately and with such care.

Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson: I was just describing it.

Sister Sarah Joan: Well it comes across as love.

Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson: Sure, I guess I pay attention.

Sister Sarah Joan: Don’t you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention?

The film deals with expectations, self-discovery, relationships, friendship…
